Members of Royal High School's Future Farmers of America and supporters of the group mingle and eat chili at the group's annual chili supper Monday night.

By: Jo Anne Wood
Contributing Writer

It was standing room only at the Pattison Area Volunteer Fire Department Monday night as the Friends of Royal FFA hosted their annual chili supper and auction for the benefit of Royal FFA students. The full to capacity parking lot forced some to park along FM 359, and at times there were few seats available in the fire department dining area.
The delicious chili was prepared by members of the Friends of Royal FFA. The Brookshire Pattison Lions Club, along with FFA students, volunteered to serve those in attendance. The tables were decorated by the students utilizing centerpieces with live flowers from the RHS Floral Design Class which were ultimately auctioned off.
The Auctioneer for the evening was Waller County Commissioner, Pct. 4, Glenn Beckendorff.
“I volunteer to do this every year because this is just one way in which I can give back to the community. It is the Friends of Royal FFA that provide the means for taking care of our own,” said Beckendorff.
Over 100 items were donated to both the live and silent auction. Among some of those donating were Kathy Armstrong, Wanda and Ervin Paben, RHS Floral Design Class, Friends of FFA, Justin and Cindy Freeman, B.K. and Jane Watson, Repka’s Country Store, Justice of the Peace, Pct. 4, Ted Krenek, Danny and Debbie Baker, Pattison Mayor Bill and Elizabeth Matthews, and State Representative John Zerwas.
“There is no better place to be this evening than to be here supporting the Friends of the Royal FFA and the students. I am happy to be included and very proud to be involved,” said Zerwas.
The Friends of Royal FFA leadership includes Kathleen Klausmeyer, Charlie Wilson, Jim and Roberta Meader, Joy McMahan, Tom and Sally Hackemack, Lillian Williams, Darleen St. Jean, Jane Watson, Marianne Skrivanek, Nelda Sturm, and Ervin and Wanda Paben.
Friends of Royal FFA supporters Kathleen Klausmeyer and Jane Watson were pleased with the turn out.
“This is a great way for people to help out in the community,” said Watson.
Klausmeyer added, “The Friends support the students by raising money throughout the year and buying their animals on sale day. The main purpose of our group is to raise enough money each year so that we can buy more animals at the FFA show. Our efforts particularly help those students that do not have buyers.
Watson concluded, “It is not necessary to have a student in the district in order to be a supporter. We invite everyone to join us as we continue to help these students in our community.”
Teacher and FFA Advisor Jason Woods said, “The Friends of FFA have played a major role in our annual livestock show and sale for many years. Their chili supper always draws a big crowd from our community supporters. All of the proceeds will go toward the purchase of student livestock projects at the auction in March. We appreciate everything they have done for us in the past and will continue to do for us in the future.”
The 129 members involved with the FFA are led by a team of ten officers. The Royal FFA Officer Team consists of President, Brooke Ivy; Vice President, Ashley McGahan; Secretary, Josie Gottfried; Treasurer, Alyssa Beyer; Reporter, Ashley Zegarrundo; Sentinel, Meredith Richardson; Student Advisor, Haley Tijerina; Chaplain, Hailey Caristi; Historian, Maverick Beissner; and Parliamentarian, Laura Rodriguez.
When asked what being a part of the FFA has taught her, Officer Team President, Brooke Ivy, enthusiastically and without hesitation responded, “Being a part of the FFA has taught me a lot; I don’t even know where to begin. I have learned responsibility and leadership. Family and friends have recognized that I am more outgoing. I used to be very quiet and shy and now everyone sees a big difference in me.”
Brooke is a junior and plans on attending Texas A&M upon graduation. She is currently raising two pigs, one for the show in Houston and the other for the Royal show in March.
“The money I have been helping to raise will help toward college. I plan to attend Texas A&M when I graduate and become a Veterinarian, Brooke said. Her sister, Courtney, is currently attending Texas A&M.
“I would like to give a big thanks to the Friends of the Royal FFA for helping us out. The chili supper is something they do every year and they put a lot of their time and effort into it. Their efforts show and it really helps us. I would like to invite everyone to come watch us show our animals and support us by attending the sale on March 6. Many, many thanks to the Friends of the Royal FFA for all they do,” concluded Brooke.
Willie Ivy, Brooke’s father and President of the Royal FFA Ag Club added, “Who would have guessed that my daughter and I would be in similar positions at the same time? I have advised Brooke that in order to do a good job you have to fill big shoes. Whatever you take on in life do the best you can. Brooke knows it requires drive and incentive to be a leader and do what others don’t or won’t. I think the FFA has taught her that with a title come big responsibilities.”
The FFA mission statement is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
The livestock show and sale will take place at the new Royal FFA Barn and the show is scheduled for March 4th and 5th with the sale taking place on Saturday, March 6th at 1:30 p.m. Saturday’s events will kick off with a parade which will begin in downtown Brookshire at 10 a.m., followed by a barbeque lunch starting at 11 a.m. in the Royal HS Cafeteria. The focus will then move to the FFA Barn where the sale will begin at 1:30 p.m.

Waller Chamber welcomes new restaurant
The Waller Area Chamber of Commerce rolled out the welcome mat to The Feed Store Restaurant recently. Hempstead’s old feed and tack store is now the newest restaurant in town, located at 52130 Hwy. 290 just east of FM 1736 across from the golf course. The Feed Store Restaurant is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week. Their classic American menu features homemade bread and desserts daily with soups, sandwiches, salads and a wide variety of delicious Italian dishes. Of course there are the tasty standbys like meatloaf, chicken fried steak, catfish, smoked meats/chicken and several surprises. It is an upscale relaxed rural atmosphere that offers a quick bite to eat or a chance to enjoy a leisurely fine meal.

“People still go by thinking it is a feed and tack store which is what it has been since it was built. They are pleasantly surprised to know that it is now serving food to a different clientele,” says Dom Catalano, partner and general manager.

The girls are doing a great job. In June, several of the girls will travel to Wichita Falls to represent the community at the State Convention. This organization would love to have more girls, so we urge any young lady within the church community to join. We thank the community’s support, with this support the girls will continue to do magnificent things.

Commissioners approve updated
subdivision regulations, mobile home rental community standards
By Courtney Burleson
Managing Editor

During a special meeting last Thursday Waller County Commissioners approved minimum standards for manufactured home rental communities and also updated the county’s Subdivision and Development Regulations.
“One of our main concerns is that we are going to have some explosive growth and we wanted to make sure everybody is on the same page and standardize how people turn things in - make it equal among all developers,” said Jonathan Hopko, acting Waller County engineer in a February 8 issue of The Times Tribune.

Issues addressed in the newly revised documents included quality of county roads, drainage, and selling off large acreage of land and then selling into small lots by a single owner.

“This will help elevate the standard of our development and makes us more consistent with larger counties around us,” said Waller County Judge Owen Ralston.

In other business, the Court:
Justice of the Peace, Pct. 2
• Approved the payment of $150.00, annual membership dues, to the Justice Court Judges Association of Texas. ($75.00 – Judge & $75.00. – Clerk), to be taken from Item 125-419-568400, miscellaneous.
Miscellaneous
• Awarded bid for the Brown County Land to J.C. Prince contingent to receiving proof of insurance. See the full story in the Feb. 22 print edition.

BKDD addresses chamber members
By Courtney Burleson
Managing Editor

Charles Kalkomey, engineer for the Brookshire Katy Drainage District discussed the District’s purpose, procedures and policies during the West I-10 Chamber of Commerce membership meeting Tuesday afternoon.
Chamber members and visitors filled Garrett’s Country Restaurant in Pattison.

Kalkomey began his presentation with a slide show of flooding in the area through the years, followed by a brief history of the District, which is basically comprised of the southeast quadrant of Waller County.

“In 1961 a group of people decided there had to be something better than taking several weeks to get around in this countryside when we did have the big rains. Highway 90 and the railroad tracks backed up water for weeks across the prairie between Brookshire and Katy, so a group of individuals got together and got the Legislature to create this district.”

He continued, discussing the District’s tight budget and its limited funds.
“Our problem has been that property taxes have been capped at .10 cents per $100 value and have been since 1961,” said Kalkomey. “We’ve gone to the voters four times in recent years, each time with specific problems, issues and projects to do in the area and four times been voted down.”

The District’s budget has gone from its height of $1 million in 1984-85 to a low of $259,000 in 1995-96. Kalkhomey said a large factor in the drop was the gas field’s values going down. However, the budget has started to climb back up with 2005-06 bringing a $530,000 budget.

“The District is trying to move forward and do as much as it can with that,” said Kalkomey. “We’ve survived with that .10 cents but its not been without some losses. A lot of channels have not been inadequately maintained and there’s some erosion issues that need to be addressed. There are certain bridges and culverts that also need to be replaced.”

He then discussed several current projects included in the District master plan which began in the mid 1980s. This includes a new set of drainage ditches in the area, and talks with the City of Houston regarding its 1700 acre Wetland Mitigation project.

Kalkomey then moved into the District’s rules and regulations, encouraging developers and new landowners to come meet with the District. He stated that the District does require permits for crossings, connecting facilities when the District has an existing easement, and tract developments. He also asked that everyone be familiar with platting rules.

Kalkomey closed by asking if any of the audience members had questions.
Craig Dickson inquired if there was any possibility of the District folding into the County.

“Why so many layers of government?” asked Dickson.

Kalkomey asked how many drainage easements the county had under their control and reminded Dickson that this part of the county is different from the rest of the county.

“It’s flat down here for the most part and there’s some specific problems and special unique things.”

One other question was asked from the audience about drainage from northern counties affecting the BKDD areas. Kalkomey stated that the BKDD’s drainage concerns derive from the Cypress Creek watershed.
Kalkomey thanked audience members for their participation and encouraged everyone to familiarize themselves with the District’s procedures and master plan. The District meets the second Monday of every month at 1111 Kenney, in Brookshire beginning at 7 p.m.

RE/MAX of Texas has announced the opening of RE/MAX Realty West in Fulshear, owned by 24-year-old real estate veteran Michael Roller. Michael designed the unique Austin Hill Country-style building to attract professional tenants who wanted a more comfortable and less commercial ambiance. And, it worked. "We are pleased Commercial State Bank, Fulshear Family Medicine, Fulshear Family Dentistry and Fulshear Pharmacy chose our building," remarks Broker of Record Michael.

Roller first moved to the Fulshear area in 1989 and has witnessed the remarkable transformation of Fulshear over the years. However, the near future will be even more impressive and that's why Roller chose to become a part of RE/MAX. "More and more independent brokerages are affiliating with international organizations because of the marketing support services and referral opportunities," said Michael Roller, the new franchise owner, "We believe the strength of RE/MAX, coupled with our commitment to customer service, makes for an unbeatable combination".

"We are selling homes, after all, so we designed a state-of-art facility that is very high-tech, yet makes guests feel "at-home" as soon as they come into our office," notes associate Rosa Ramos, who leads the office in professional designations, including CRS, ABR and GRI. "We also plan to host the RE/MAX Satellite Network® in our office to give our expanding staff all the benefits of its educational programming."

By Courtney Burleson
Managing Editor

Cold and rainy weather didn’t keep local and area Royal FFA supporters from enjoying some hot chili earlier this week. The “Friends of Royal FFA” held their annual chili supper and auction Monday night, raising approximately $10,500.

“I think it was a great success and am glad people braved the nasty weather to come out,” said Friends of Royal FFA member Kathleen Klausmeyer. “We served about 150 pounds of meat and 300 bags of Fritos.”

Members of the Brookshire Pattison Lions Club served hot chili, with all the extras, while Royal FFA students handed out drinks and desserts. Desserts were provided by the FFA Parents Club. Chili cookers included Kathleen Klausmeyer, Nelda Sturm, Charlie Wilson, Darleen St. Jean, Jane Watson, Jim and Roberta Meader, Judi Klausmeyer and Joy McMahan.

However, the highlight of the evening came as auctioneer Glenn Beckendorff began the annual live auction. The highest bid item was a wooden chest, which sold for $375. It was donated by Jim and Roberta Meader. See the full story in the Feb. 1 print edition.

Local youth wins Cat Club Show awards
Lindsey Maresh, along with her three mixed breed cats, competed at the annual Houston Cat Club show this past Saturday and Sunday at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston.

Maresh’s cats were awarded 14 major awards including third in the Best of the Best competition. The judging format is three different competitions judged each day with the top ten awards given under each judge. Each cat is awarded points for the number of cats that they defeat.

On Sunday, Maresh’s cat “Cledus” was awarded third overall under all judges. Cledus is currently ranked second in the Gulf Shore Region which comprises ten states.

Maresh, an eighth grade student at Royal Middle School, also has another cat ranked in the top ten. “Oscar” is an orange nine-month-old cat that is consistently placing in the finals under 80 percent of the time.

Waller County EDP joins
in regional marketing effort
Earlier this year, the Greater Houston Partnership announced a bold strategic plan to promote economic growth and prosperity in the 10-county region around Houston. Its objectives are ambitious: to contribute to the creation of 600,000 new jobs, $60 billion in capital investment, and $225 billion in foreign trade.

The program is called Opportunity HoustonSM, and it is an aggressive five year marketing program that will generate leads for economic development organizations throughout the 10-county region. Houston Astros owner Drayton McLane is heading the $40 million fundraising component of the program, which is believed to be the largest initiative of its type ever in the United States.

This is an ambitious program designed to turn those goals into reality - and to ensure that Waller County will be able to maximize the benefits that come with a strong, thriving regional economy. The results will be more leads for larger projects resulting in more jobs for Waller County citizens.  WCEDP Executive Director Vince Yokom stated; "We have already begun to see the benefits of joining this initiative. As part of the kick-off, Waller County Economic Development Partnership was listed with other participating EDO groups in a full page ad that appeared in the Houston Chronicle. We could never afford that type of exposure on our own."

Overall, the program targets five major economic sectors: aviation and aerospace, energy and petrochemical, medical and biotechnology, information technology, and nanotechnology. All are among the industries identified by the Partnership's plan as critical to our future prosperity. Beyond that, they create the kind of high-impact, high-yield jobs whose benefits are felt region-wide.

The money raised, which will come from large and small business throughout the region, will improve our ability to create jobs and attract new investment in a number of ways. Included among the potential components of our enhanced outreach strategy are:
• Development of a high-tech Geographic Information System that can capture location-specific data and link prospects with specific regional sites that best meet their requirements;
• New lead-generation methods that will enable the Partnership to identify - and aggressively pursue - the strongest potential prospects in key growth sectors;
• Enhanced efforts to strengthen our image and raise our visibility internationally; and
• Marketing and public relations initiatives designed to impact perceptions of the Houston region across the nation and around the world.
