Coach Thomas and Ms. Fletcher encourage students at Hempstead Elementary to join in the Kids Heart Challenge to get healthy and raise funds to help kids with special hearts.

Hempstead Elementary Committed to Kids Heart Challenge

The Kids Heart Challenge is underway at Hempstead Elementary. The challenge, that raises funds for the American Heart Association, kicked off on Tuesday, January 15 with a goal to raise $1500 before Friday, February 8. During the kick-off assembly, students heard from Lisa Fletcher, a representative from AHA, along with one of the elementary’s Heart Heroes, Mr. Larry Stephenson. Ms. Tracey Moore, another Heart Hero at Hempstead Elementary, shared her open heart story with the students as well.

Within a week, the students had already raised half of their goal. In addition to receiving individual thank you gifts, Ms. Fletcher will take a pie to the face when the school goal is met.

Coach Thomas, the elementary PE teacher, felt the students could double their goal by the end of the challenge and has encouraged them by offering to take a pie to the face if the school raises $3200.

Through the Kids Heart Challenge, kids learn jump rope skills, how their heart works and raise money to help kids with special hearts. Kids are having fun, learning how to stay healthy and making a difference in the lives of others!

February is a time to focus on our hearts. In 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson declared February as the first American Heart Month to tackle heart disease in the United States. During PE, students are learning facts about heart conditions and ways to make changes to improve and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
