Student Enthusiasm is Multiplying at Hempstead Elementary

“Come on Ms. Mullens! What’s the multiplication fact for today?” thought second grader Jayden Barrientos as he sits paper and pencil in hand waiting for the daily multiplication fact to come over the morning announcements.

Students at Hempstead Elementary are enthused about math and look forward to the morning announcements each day to see what the multiplication fact of the day will be.

Each morning, Principal Samantha Mullens includes a multiplication fact in the announcements for the day. Students have 20 seconds to solve the problem on a scratch piece of paper after which teachers check them for accuracy. All students who answer the problem correctly have their paper placed in a campus basket and on Thursdays a name is drawn for a small prize.
