Waller High School UIL heads to State
Members of the Waller High School (WHS) UIL Academic Team once again proved their greatness during the Region 3-5A UIL Academic Meet held April 12-13 at WHS. There, 14 students, the Spelling Team, and the Current Events Team qualified for the UIL State Academic meet and, out of 65 schools, WHS was runner-up in the Sweepstakes Competition falling only to defending state champion College Station High School.
Four WHS Speech and Debate students previously qualified for State. That makes a total of 17 statebound WHS UIL Academics competitors. This is the highest Regional finish in WHS UIL Academics history beating the record previous record of 12 in 2012.
At Regionals, the top three individuals and top team in each event, along with runner-up Wild Card teams, advance to State. For the fourth consecutive year, the Spelling Team came in first to claim the Regional Champion title. The Current Events Team also advanced, winning State Wild Card.
The WHS Academic Team has consistently grown throughout the school year. They won Sweepstakes Champions at all four of their Invitational Meets then went on to claim the District Championship at the District 19-5A UIL Meet. They will now compete at the State UIL Academic Meet on May 3-4 at University of Texas at Austin.
